Today at the forum we broke into workshops to learn about building new communications tools to help increase the visibility of our societies:  using photos and videos, celebrities, social media and how to communicate in crises. We also heard about some best practices our sister societies had developed.  One of the most popular is what Pumi Yeni from the South African Red Cross created, called the Humanity Chain.  This is a digital fundraising effort to get two million people to sign up online to donate 20 Rand (about $2-$3) to the South African Red Cross and “link hands” online across South Africa.

Respeito Chirrenze is the volunteer management coordinator at the Mozambique Red Cross in Africa, which is a younger national society. They started in 1981. Their work focuses primarily on disasters — especially cyclones, floods and droughts — and health issues such as HIV/AIDS.

 Darlene Washington’s interview on the Joe Madison radio show on 1450 WOL AM.

The January 18th interview provided an opportunity for us to share vital fire safety tips and highlight the American Red Cross partnership with HOPE worldwide, a faith-based relief and development organization that went door-to-door with Red Cross volunteers to distribute fire safety tips in 10 cities on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  Mary Etta Boesl worked with the Officer of the National Chair of Volunteers on this project and Shilpika Das wrote this article on RCO: http://www.redcross.org/article/0,1072,0_312_7472,00.html
